Conditions

Optimum Conditions

First off, it’s essential that the weather is not too hot, windy, or wet. In days with 95°+ temperatures, the paint has a tendency to dry too fast. This increases the chances of leaving permanent marks from the paint brush. It would be a shame to have to repaint the fence after all the work is completed.

Windy days can have the same effect, drying out the paint before it’s been smoothed out. There’s also the chance that paint drops could be caught by the wind and splashed onto the fence. Finally, wet weather is an obvious no-no for painting projects. That’s why our team tries to find a day or two with a clear weather forecast.

Prepping

Preparation Process

To begin, the fence must be completely cleaned off. Rust is a common problem for cast iron fences, especially those with water trapped inside. It needs to be dealt with, or the final paint coating won’t adhere correctly to the iron. This process may require a special chemical agent to break down the rust. The wrought iron bars will likely require sanding (and in rare cases, pressure washing) to remove all the previous paint and rust particles. If the old paint isn’t removed, there’s a chance that the new coating will start to peel long before its time.

Our painting professionals will ensure that any dirt clumps, rust, or old paint fragments aren’t in the way. Before the project begins in earnest, the fence should be wiped down with a dry rag to remove in remaining debris. Once the fence has been checked, our team can proceed with the priming.

Painting Time

Painting

The primer plays a two part role: protection and support. First, the primer works to inhibit the development of rust in the future. For iron fences that have already developed heavy rusting, a primer is a must! Once the primer has been allowed to dry (which takes anywhere from a few hours to a day), the enameled paint coating should be ready for application.

The paint is typically applied via roller, with small brushing touch ups for small nooks and crannies. The fence will need a full day to dry completely, though it should be dry to the touch within a few hours. As we mentioned earlier, our painters will need to be sure that the painting project will have enough time to dry completely.
